Fitting a Think rudder to a Fenn

I have always wanted to fit an elliptical rudder to a Fenn, particularly a Mako 6 as it is my favourite ski. I can paddle an Elite but I prefer the 6 for all round stability and performance particularly in chop. Its main weakness is that the shark fin loses bite because of the ski's rocker and the fin's proximity to the tail causes the odd broach particularly in big swells.

Fenn Mako Elite Slim Line – First Looks

I had the good fortune to paddle the latest Fenn creation last weekend – the Mako Elite Slim Line (SL).  I’d heard that the boat was tippier than the Elite and I was curious to see how I’d handle it.

Sam Dawson was catching waves in his Fenn Mako XT at a favourite spot near South Sound, Grand Cayman.  Suddenly his world turned upside down - literally.  “I got caught by a wave and flipped off,'' Dawson said. “The wave took the surf ski away from me - I assumed never to be seen again.”

Tip: Juice stowage inside Fenn XT.

ImageDehydration is generally regarded as a Bad Thing when paddling. So, if a race is likely to be more than an hour long, paddlers take liquid with them - and where to stow it is a subject of considerable debate.

For many, the solution is to tape a bladder to the deck in front of the rudder pedals and to run a pipe back to the seat. Others prefer "Tripper" type PFDs that have a pocket on the back into which the bladder can be fitted. The pipe is run through a series of Velcro straps to the front of the PFD.

Both of these solutions, by adding weight above the centre of gravity of the ski, lessen stability.

This article describes a solution implemented by David Cade who lives in Hout Bay, Cape Town.

Surfski.info Review: Fenn Mako Elite

When I lost my beloved carbon Fenn Mako6 at the end of a disastrous downwind, I took the opportunity to order a new carbon Mako Elite from Keith Fenn.  Hearing of my dire ski-less condition he delivered a new one very rapidly and I've been paddling it for the last couple of months.

First looks: the Fenn Mako Elite Triple

Most of us know the sadness and despair of breaking a ski, and usually the pieces are consigned to a dumpster.   But when Dale "T-bone King" Lippstreu smashed his new Fenn Mako Elite Double recently at the end of a downwind paddle, he met the challenge full on.

Doubles Comparison: Elite v Apex

[Three weeks ago, Dale Lippstreu and I did back-to-back Millers Runs in two different double skis: the Fenn Mako Elite Double and the Custom Kayaks Apex.  Dale was the driver in both cases.]
