There's a great lineup for the second Chicago Shoreline Marathon this weekend - South Africans Dawid & Nikki Mocke and Steve Woods have continued their tour from San Francisco; last year's winner Erik Borgnes will be there as will our favorite adventure writer, New Yorker Joe Glickman.

The Marathon

The 25 mile race (on Saturday 27 September) takes the paddlers north from Calumet Harbor on the far south side of Chicago to Leone Beach on the north side.  At this time of year, the prevailing south winds should make this an outstanding downwind race.

Windguru is currently forecasting a very light southerly wind for Saturday that is going to be no help at all to the paddlers... so it looks like a grueling race is in the offing.  "I packed a box of 48 Rocket Gels," laughed Nikki Mocke, "and it looks as though I'm going to need them!"

Check out a couple of interviews with Dawid and Nikki here:

Downwind 2 Dubai

Downwind 2 Dubai

This is the second of the US Downwind 2 Dubai races - the local hero (i.e. the local paddler who comes closest to winning) will collect $500 by attending the Dubai Shamaal race in the UAE on December 2.  The next race in the series is the New York Mayor's Cup.

Other winners so far have been:

  • •·      Benoit Leroux of France (North Sea Championships)
  • •·      Patrick Hemmens (US Champs)
