"37.56... pardon!"  That cryptic text message, arriving on my mobile phone at 14h45 this afternoon told me all I needed to know.  Dawid Mocke had smashed the Garmin Millers Run Challenge record into a cocked hat.

Cape Downwind Dash Records Tumble

Thursday, 07 February 2008 15:22 |

(Editor: Don't even think about trying this unless you're very experienced in extreme conditions...)

Three downwind records were broken in the last 24 hours as a gale-force southeaster blasted Cape Town.

The Milnerton to Blouberg downwind route is well beloved here in Cape Town and has been paddled for 25 years or more.  The paddle was formalized 11 or 12 years ago and became known as the Downwind Dash - and Richard Kohler has been running it since 2000.

The way it works is this: anyone wishing to challenge the record for the downwind run between Bakoven Rock (off Millers Point) and Fish Hoek here in Cape Town will be required to record the run on a Garmin Forerunner GPS and to submit the unit for verification by the competition judges, Alain Jaques and Rob Mousley of Surfski.info.

Gale Force?  Interest has been expressed in some quarters as to just how strong the wind was last Wednesday when the Downwind Dash records were beaten.  Jean Tresfon, sent us the story of what happened at his factory - which is located near to Milnerton and probably experienced the same wind conditions.

Thursday, 01 February 2007 14:45 |

Image The "Millers Run", a downwind route between Millers Point and Fish Hoek in Cape Town can be pretty daunting when the southeaster is up and False Bay is full of breaking waves.

But Duncan Buchanan, a 14 year old visitor from Auckland, New Zealand, was keen to give it a go.
