Replacement parts for older surf ski

How difficult is it to repair or get parts for older surf skis that are no longer in production and the manufacturer is no longer in business? For instance, if the foot pedals were damaged or the rudder was damaged, would there be no way to have the boat fixed? Are there universal parts for foot pedals or rudder assemblies?

Are there any other parts of a surf ski that would require oem support? I imagine that the hull in general could be repaired by any boat repair specialist, but I am concerned about proprietary parts that are not available any longer.

Thanks for any insight.

There is nothing that humans have built that:
a) cannot be broken
b) cannot be open
c) cannot be fixed or replaced by building new parts

You risk nothing, expect perhaps spending a little more money for repairs/rebuilding broken parts - but even that is usually pretty simple of a task.

Hi Ken,
You will find that many components such as rudders and pedals can be substituted with those from another manufacturer with only slight modifications.

There are so many rudder styles and designs around that finding one to fit is really not a major problem. As for pedals, they are generally pretty easy to repair or replace with home built units.

So the fact that backup support from a ski manufacturer is no longer available isn't really a big issue if you find a good secondhand bargain out there.

I broke my Fenn's rudder. I live in French Polynesia (lucky me), and could not find a Fenn rudder here. I just put a Nelo one, had to change the cross piece that the cable connect to, but that's an easy job. Also had a friend who broke pedals. He just made some with fiberglass and bought stainless steel hinges from a hardware store. As Photofr said, anything can be fixed or repaired.
