J and J Canoe at jjcanoe.com in their Accessories section sells Maxiglide Speed Coating. If I recall correctly research was done that showed a increase in speed of a few percent. You should email J and J for more info. and I would appreciate it if you would post it for the rest of us. They also have lots of other interesting products.

In the sailing world, the way to go is generally taken as the micro texture mentioned earlier. The way it is usually done is to sand the bottom with 600 or 1000 grit water paper. First sand diagonally one direction until all the gloss is gone, then sand the opposite direction until you cannot see the first set of scratches, then sand lengthwise until the second set of scratches is no longer visible.

Probelm is, you may now have taken off all your gelcoat so be careful and as mentioned before, it doesn't look good unless wet.

Best way to go fast is to get parents with the right genes and train hard :-)

I'm not about to sandpaper my brand new Mako 6!!! I recall there was a lot of work done with "sharkskin" textured swimming costumes. Specifically with Olympic swimmers. Perhaps our boats should be clad in shark skin?

And lay off the pies and beer that make a boat sit low in the water.
