New to the sport.

Enjoying watching videos of surfskiers on Millers Run and noticed that all the paddlers "brace" with their paddles. That is , they seem to hold the paddle lateral to the boat, stationary and allow it to skim it across the top of the water.

Why are they doing this? How does this help is in surfing the wave?

Basically staying upright - there's very little force on the water and very little drag, but it's enough to help you stay upright!
