Stroke Rate was created by JazzyJ
Hi All,

Could someone tell me for an untrained (newbie to racing ski's)how many strokes per minutes will it take to travel at approximately 15kph? I have an Epic V8 Club Surf Ski.
This is my aim. If anyone has any effective interval training sessions to achieve this, I would be forever grateful.

Cheers JazzyJ

For what distance would you like to travel at 15km/h? 200 metres perhaps?

Have a look at this, might help. www.insightsport.com/files/1353451800_st...ng%20flyer171112.pdf

Good luck!

Hope it's a good downwind course as 12k in 55 mins would be pretty impressive on the flat!

Good luck

Hi JazzyJ

Our regular 'flat' water paddle is a tad over 11km. It's out and back affected by tide/river/wind etc.

While comparing ability is relative (most of us are close to 50!), one of the guys I rate highly managed an average of 10.5km/hr.

My average in an old XT is 9.7 km/hr and in a previous faster ski I have once managed 10km at an average of 10km/hr!

Sumo be able to provide some stats from his quiver of boats on the same course.

Good Luck training!

Here is a post on a north west surfski page about the 8 mph/12.9 kph club. There are some very strong paddlers here. Do note the comment on the 9mph/ 14.5 kph clubs..... Best start training!

Nice one newbflat will give that a crack tomorrow.

In the K1 we had a regular measured out and back river course that was bang on 12k and breaking the hour for that course was the benchmark that you were in good shape, we had a GB national team marathon paddler who held the record this course at 52mins + change on a very good day.

If you are a newbie, focus on learning good technique and don't worry so much about speed. Take some lessons if possible. Worrying about speed right away and pushing every workout seems to lead to injury or poor technique or both.
I only started a year and half ago but managed to get a video analysis session with greg barton a few months in. It made world of difference.

I would have to agree with nickc.
Your stroke rate won't matter if you have a terrible stroke. So you can do interval sessions, gym work, whatever, and paddle at 100 strokes per minute, but if you can't efficiently apply the force into the water it's all for naught.
As for 15kph over 12km in a V8, I assume there will be some major kind of current and/or wind behind you? The winning time for the senior men at the USA team trials last month for the K1 1000m Sprint was 3'53" (15.4kph).

I´ve been in Tarifa last year for surfski paddling and you have to consider that there is quite a strong current in the strait of Gibraltar. Just to put these speeds in perspective. Even with the help of the current we were averageing much less than 15 km/h but we are no experts and we did´nt really care. It was great fun anyway.

Current Ski: Nelo 550 L
Previous Skis: Stellar SR 1. Gen. / Stellar SEI 1. Gen. / Stellar SR 2. Gen.

Yes, that is why speeds in the ocean are not that relevant, conditions are that different. Look at Perth conditions for example, if you are going 16 km/hr that is fast in a downwind but slow for example in Durban region where 18 km/hr is achievable with a similar strength paddler.
