Professional new layout for Surfski.Info

Sunday, 19 August 2007 16:48 |

Welcome to the new and improved After a few late nights working on getting it just right we are now happy to go live with the News Portal format. The previous sequential blog-type format served us well but it did not do justice to the over 400 articles which were hidden under layers of menus. This prompted us to spend some time and money implementing a professional news portal.

This advanced news portal format is similar to that of top news websites like and and promises a number of advantages.

  • Looks great
  • Easy navigation
  • Maximum use of the frontpage real estate
  • Smooth article flow for easy surfing
  • Smart image handling
  • Section page and category page

We hope you like the new format, soon we will be reorganizing the Sections and Categories to improve the structure and we will be providing regional front pages for local content.

Let us know what you think...

V10 Copy - Again ** now with Poll **

Sunday, 27 May 2007 14:27 |

ImageImagine that little Johnny hands his essay in to his university lecturer.  "I've copied someone else's paper," he says, "but it's ok, I've only used 70% of it and I've improved some of the details."  "It's a great piece of work," he adds, "the original had very good reviews."

Unlikely?  This appears to be exactly what Damien Daley has done with his "70%" copy of the V10, the "XLR8 Odyssey" surf ski.

Shark Incident near Hout Bay

Sunday, 27 May 2007 05:42 |

ImageSharks are a highly emotive topic, especially when combined with surfing or paddling, but here in Cape Town we have to face the fact that we share the water with them when we paddle.

This incident is published to illustrate that an encounter even with an aggressive Great White need not end badly.  We also asked shark researcher Allison Kock what paddlers should do when faced with such a situation.

Surfing the "Mound", Durban, South Africa

Saturday, 10 March 2007 17:39 |

ImageOn Sunday, 4 March 2007, Gavin Searle sent me an email.  “Give me a call,” he said, “some guys got properly taken out on the Mound yesterday.  Today was cleaner – we got up to 37km/h down the face of a monster.”

“Huh?” I thought, “What’s the Mound?”

New - Events Calendar

Friday, 19 March 2010 10:38 |

We're finally beginning to make progress in adding value to again.  (We had an unfortunate experience upgrading the site and then have been battling with hackers for the last couple of weeks.)

We've started by launching an open events calendar - open that is to you, to put your events up.

Sharks and Skis

Saturday, 03 March 2007 06:47 |

ImageIn the last ten years there have been a number of interactions between paddlers and sharks off the South African coast.  This article describes the incidents and debunks some of the myths about the animals.  Paddling is a much safer sport than most – in spite of the emotion and fear associated with sharks.

Awesome Oz Surf Photos

Wednesday, 28 February 2007 12:24 |

ImageSomeone posted a link on the yahoogroups surfski newsgroup a couple of days ago.  It simply said, "rough stuff" and gave the link:

We checked it out to find a series of great shots of surf skis going out through some mean surf...

Surfski Video

Wednesday, 07 February 2007 11:54 |

ImageSan Francisco based photographer Martin Sundberg made this video clip about the sport of Surfski.  It shows Zsolt Szadovszki (a top US paddler, came 5th in the 2006 US Champs) talking about what he thinks of surfski, and then goes on to show Zsolt paddling in front of the SF skyline.

Apart from the beautiful photography, Zsolt’s words really resonate with me - and the clip is worth watching for Zsolt’s immaculate paddling stroke.

Nathan Baggaley Arrested on Drugs Charge

Tuesday, 06 February 2007 11:27 |

More bad news about Nathan Baggaley.

Australian newspapers and websites are carrying the story about his arrest on serious drug charges.  It seems that police stopped Baggaley and a companion in Mermaid Waters, northern NSW and on searching their car found "nearly 800 ecstasy tablets, an unspecified white powder, cannabis and cash".
