Image The New Zealand King of the Harbour race takes place in Auckland on 24th/25th of March 2007.

South Africans Bevan Manson, Oscar Chalupsky (current Australia World Cup Champion) and Dawid Mocke (King of the Harbour winner in 2004 and 2005) will be flying to Auckland to take on the best that the rest of the world have to offer.

The King of the Harbour, one of the most prestigious surf ski races in the international calendar, is a two-day event held on North Island, New Zealand.  The results from the three-man relay event on day 1 are combined with the individual event on day 2 to compute the team and individual titles.

Some interesting stats: average speed 9.5mph/15.5kph; max speed 13.9mph/22.3kph.


According to MotionBased, the wind speed was 14-18mph/23-30kph WSW.

As a warm-up to the Australian Surf Ski World Cup race next weekend, South African contenders Oscar Chalupsky (aged 43) and Darryl Bartho lined up with 55 other paddlers at Fremantle Port Beach.


World Cup Australia - 25/26 Nov 2006

ImageThe Australian Surf Ski World Cup takes place on 25 and 26 November 2006 in Perth, Western Australia.


Race 1 on 25 November is 25km in length running from Fremantle Beach to Sorrento Beach.

Race 2 on 26 November is  Rottnest Island to Hillarys Boat Harbour, Scarborough


Note that the event is scheduled conveniently for the inaugural Dubai Shamal International Surf Ski Race which will run on 1st December.



Changes to Classic Races: Justifiable or not?

As we all know, Surf Ski is growing as a sport.  But that growth is presenting race organisers with a dilemma. More and more paddlers want to enter the "classic" races like the Cape Point Challenge and the PE to EL Challenge.  But these races have reputations for extreme conditions, both in terms of endurance and the sea states that can occur on the course.

Last weekend saw the legendary Perth Doctor take place in Perth, Australia. South African Dawid Mocke took on Australia's best and beat them in their own backyard... Jeremy Cotter (Aus) was a close second, Bruce Taylor (Aus) came third while Mocke's younger brother Jasper came in fourth place – his best result yet in an international race.
