Dubai Shamaal 2010 Dubai Shamaal 2010 Credits: Hywell Waters

Here's a great video of the 2010 Dubai Shamaal, created by the Three Monkeys crew.  Australian Ben Allen won the race, after an epic battle with South African Dawid Mocke on a hot, flat sea.

The race - in photos

Hywell Waters took these pics from the media escort boat...

Jasper Mocke and Sean Rice accelerate away from the beach at the start

Dubai Shamaal Start

Ben Allen and Jeremy Cotter were on a line to the left, on their own (but joined the main stream half way to the turning buoy)

Dubai Shamaal Tim Jacobs

Tim Jacobs said afterwards that he just wasn't on form on the day - but the camera mounted on the back of his ski also didn't help.  He stopped to ask an escort boat to remove it.  (I was relieved to get the camera back, having lent it to the videographers!)

Meanwhile, up front Hank McGregor, Dawid Mocke and Sean Rice were sprinting out to the turning buoy

Dubai Shamaal Turning Buoy

Ben Allen and Hank McGregor rounded the turning buoy first - with Dawid Mocke and Sean Rice in hot pursuit

Ben Allen leads the way, with Dawid Mocke moving up.  Mocke went into the lead, but he and Allen fought neck and neck almost the whole way.  Hank McGregor (here lying third) moved to an inshore line where he paddled with Jeremy Cotter.  It was not the right move and the lead three (Allen, Mocke, Rice) had a distinct advantage when they reached the final stages of the race.

And then there were three...  Ben Allen broke away a couple of times, but Mocke kept coming back.  21 year old Sean Rice paddled a monumental race and hung in with the two more experienced paddlers.

Dubai Shamaal two leaders

And then there were two.  Mocke came back yet again and came under the bridge to the Palm on Ben Allen's slip.  He'd used just too much energy though, and when Allen made his final move, Mocke had no answer.

Dubai Shamaal final sprint

Ben Allen sprints to the finish and to win his first Dubai Shamaal...

Dubai Shamaal you da man!

Mocke acknowledges Ben Allen's superb win...  "you da man!"

Dubai Shamaal Michele Eray

Michele Eray paddled a great race, beating fellow South African Nikki Mocke.
