Long Beach Kommetjie – Cape Town – Dawid Mocke tightened his stranglehold on the 2011 Discovery Sunglass Hut Surfski Series with his third win of the series today,  taking the line honours by the narrowest of margins in the Butlers Pizza LBK Challenge held between Long Beach Kommetjie and Noordhoek.

Mockè was locked in a thriller of an end sprint duel with his younger brother Jasper and Tom Schilperoort as they came into the finish. Schilperoort fell back in the process leaving the siblings to scrap it out.

With both having won two races in the series, the outcome was particularly important in terms of the overall series standings.

Idyllic day out

Dawid Mockè won by a paddle breadth, taking him one step closer to defending his series title. Race boss Billy Harker needed to caucus with his two line judges before awarding the title to Dawid Mockè, who also win the overall race between the beach runners and the surfski paddlers.

"It's great to have won the sursfki race and beaten the runners," he said afterward. "This series is as hard to win as any international race in the world and Jasper (Mockè), Tom (Schilperoort) and fourth placed Sean Rice are as good an opposition as you will find anywhere in the world.

Women's Race

Alexa Cole, winner of last week’s race had a closer race this week in the elite ladies beating Kim Brugmann by a minute and 12 seconds with Bianca Beavitt 3rd.

"It was hard and flat and was excited to win," said Cole afterwards. "I enjoyed the extra pressure from Kim and the fact that its getting more competitive”.

The men's double ski race was also very close with Phil Pla-Pillans and Dale Lewis (fifth overall) beating the under 16 year old team of Kenny Rice and Nicholas Notten (6th overall) by four seconds followed by Daniel and Martin Sheard a further six minutes later.

Curious Man in Grey

There was an anxious moment for the group of paddlers chasing the leading bunch when they spotted a Great White Shark off “The Dunes” on the run for home. They elected to stop paddling and bunch together for safety until the shark had moved off.

Conditions

After a week of strong to gale force southeasters which had paddlers wondering which course would be chosen, the wind dropped and the race was held in idyllic summer conditions where the first leg had them paddling in to a lightening wind and returning with the wind at their backs.

This was the first year that the Discovery Sunglass Hut series joined with this annual event, where paddlers also race against runners, running over the same distance along the beach and the winner of which gets free entry into the nationally acclaimed event of the same format in East London.

Race boss Billy Harker won the 6km beach race, adding further reason to celebrate the recent birth of his twins.

The last race of the series is next weekend at Fish Hoek Beach, The Hansa Peter Creese Light House Race. More details can be found at www.surfski.co.za
