Folks, it really IS a tropical paradise Folks, it really IS a tropical paradise

A week of great paddling awaits those going to the fourth edition of the Mauritius Ocean Classic.  Starting on Sunday, 24 June 2012 with ski issue and then into training sessions with Dawid Mocke and Barry Lewin.  Everyday there will be scheduled downwind paddles, allowing all to get familiar with the conditions and ready for the races.

Painting a picture

But let me step back and paint the scene for you.

Le Morne, Mauritius

Heading downwind towards Le Morne

Mauritius is a small volcanic island in the southern tropic in the Indian Ocean – in the path of the Southern Trade Winds.  So you have a beautiful Island, really friendly and helpful people (other than Customs – but that is universal!), an infrastructure that works, great resorts (thanks to LUX Resorts – we share in this) and of course great weather and some of the best paddling conditions in the world. Check out Windguru (www.windguru.cz/int/index.php?sc=118) or YR (http://www.yr.no/place/Mauritius/Black_River/Le_Morne/)

Catching the wave

So Mauritius was a really fertile place for a paddling race to be conceived. Dominic Henry of JPH Boathouses and Charles Brand of Epic Kayaks formalized the concept and I was roped in as Race Director. We realized that we needed a resort partner and we found the best in Albert D’Unienville Events Manager of LUX Island Resorts who just happen to have a resort hotel – Tamassa – on the race route and an awesome luxury hotel – Le Morne – at the finish! Keith Fenn then also came on board with a container of skis and suddenly the concept was a reality.

Having fun

Catching air - a few days before the 2010 race

How easy can it be?

Ok, you followed the simple entry process on www.mauritiusoceanclassic.com and booked your Air Mauritius flight and accommodation at Tamassa. You fly in to Mauritius, transferred to Tamassa, where we issue you your ski and pamper you beyond your imagination! Your ski is branded, race numbered and waiting for you some 20 meters from the water! Do a down wind and we wash your ski off and tie it on the trailer (while you jump on the happy-bus back to Tamassa).  Next downwind or just want to paddle off Tamassa and wow, your ski is back where you found it before!

Organisation...

Skis loaded, on their way back to the start - just too easy.

Add to this the opportunity to be coached and paddle with champions and we have an awesome event.

The breakfasts, dinners and drinks with a great bunch of athletes are in itself a good enough reason to be part of the event.

What does the 2012 MOC look like?

We have 81 international entries to date and if you add the 30 locals that will pitch, we have an event of note! See the attached entry list and you will see quality and quantity. Dawid Mocke, Hank McGregor, Dean Beaumont, Rich von Wilderman, Hayden Smith, Jeremy Cotter, Jasper Mocke, Daryl Bartho, Dean Gardiner Barry Lewin, and Herman Chalupsky amongst others – ouch - making the top ten looks hard!

As I said earlier, ski issue takes place from Sunday 24th June at Tamassa, with downwinds and coaching sessions from the Monday, a Sporty’s Downwind Memorial Race on the Wednesday and then we hold out for the race window of Friday and Saturday – we will make the call on Thursday as to which day we will race on and on what course we will follow. On race routes, we have a number of options – all between 24 and 28 km.

We all hope for a Soulac to Le Morne route as this delivers the best paddling option.  No matter what route we choose, the race will end at Le Morne (SW corner of Mauritius) and there will be significant safety provided by JPH Boathouses and the Mauritius Coast Guard.

Besides the paddling, there is time to do the island tourist thing – dive with dolphins, deep sea fishing, nature hikes, island shopping or simply sucking up the UV’s around  one the Tamassa pools with a icy cold Phoenix Beer or two close by. Oh yes, bring the kids, wife, girlfriend and / or boyfriend along – they will love it!

Dolphins

Yep, you get really close to wild dolphins

See you in the sunshine in June at Tamassa, Mauritius.
