2012 Mauritius Ocean Classic - Who's coming?

Four weeks to go to one of the premier events on the Oceanpaddler World Series calendar… the 4th Mauritius Ocean Classic.  And an awesome line-up of the world's top surfski paddlers will be there.

Skis in transit

This year most of the hire skis are being provided by Fenn Kayaks – and the container just left their factory in East London, South Africa bound for Mauritius… [Editor: A big thank you to Fenn – without one of big manufacturers stepping up to send a container, these races cannot happen.]

A container load of skis just left the Fenn factory in transit to Mauritius...

Late Entries = more fire-power

We now have over 100 entries. (Check out the list – if your name is there you entry is confirmed and a ski has been allocated. If you have entered and your name is not on the list then let Dominic know by email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) – and some of the late entries carry some serious fire power:

  • Oscar Chalupsky – fresh from a Molokai win – would love to take the MOC title
  • Matt Bouman – has come close so often – is hungry
  • Kurt “the Muscle” Tutt could also keep the front boys nervous, as could Cory Hill.

Slumming it at Tamassa

One of the best things about the MOC is that almost everyone stays at the same venue: the luxurious Tamassa Hotel.

Tamassa

Tropical paradise or what?!

The vibe starts the moment the guys get off the plane:  The youngsters talking weather, waves, and wind and asking each other who could do what in the various conditions.

The older bullets discussing past downwinds and asking the really serious questions like: Do you think that Sega Dancing Girl is really into me and whose turn is it to get the beers?

Chalupsky floats from one group to the next, chirping the wannabes and pinting Phoenix beers with the old boys (and spending time coaching anyone and everyone on the water).

Races within races

Apart from the main event, there are a couple of other races to be hard fought on (and off!) the water:

We have the FTL Aussie vs. Saffa Challenge: The first five paddlers from each will count; this could be really close. Saffa’s have the two Mockes, Hank McGregor, Matt Bouman, Oscar Chalupsky, Barry Lewin, Richard von Wildemann and Herman Chalupsky. The Aussies have Jeremy Cotter, Dean Gardiner, Mark Anderson, Dean Beament, Hayden Smith, Cory Hill, Will Bird, James Knowles, Kurt Tutt and Adam Fahey. It could well come down to who finishes 10th rather than who wins the race!

The Inter Island Race between Hong Kong, Reunion and Mauritius – the top two paddlers count – will be interesting – young gun Simon De Speville of Mauritius should lead the pack but Reunion might have better depth.

Women’s Race

The women’s race will have Ruth Highman hoping to defend her title but two SA ladies – Kirsten Wessels and Kerry Louw - will be determined to spoil Ruth’s day. Camille de Carmejane, fresh from a Molokai podium, and second last year would love to take the step to glory.

And overall…

The men’s race is going to be a hard one to call – can Dawid defend his title, will Hank take it for the third time or will Jasper, Oscar or one of the many other talented paddlers disrupt the party?!

And of course the race to the top of the Oceanpaddler World Series Rankings is full on - Dawid Mocke is ranked #1 currently but Aussie Jeremy Cotter is not far behind.

Surfski.info coverage

Stories reflecting the vibe and reporting on the downwind action in the build up to the Island Shamaal Mauritius Ocean Classic, will be posted on Surfski.info.  And, as in the past, there will be live text commentary on the day provided by surfski.info.
