Mauritius Ocean Classic - thumbs up from South African Boris Hales Mauritius Ocean Classic - thumbs up from South African Boris Hales

Dominic and his watermen (headed by Wesley at Tamassa and Rudi at Le Morne), Albert and his Lux Islanders (headed by “I will do it” Jerome) are ready for the invasion. Trailers are greased, skis are ready and the beers are in the fridge.

Camera, Lights, Action (or is it “Ski, Paddle, Action”?!)

As I am based in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, I have now packed (paddles, PFD, leash, suntan lotion, hydration system, shorts etc) - final check and I am leaving on a jet plane for Tamassa Mauritius. Oh – hang on – better feed the dogs and drop off the kids somewhere! (Yes, Louise is coming along to help.)

I have to try to run this show – better put in laptop and all the admin stuff – work in paradise?

Good news - we have skis!  The container landed a few days ago...

Mauritius Ocean Classic 2012

Characters

The field is littered with characters like Ken Vidler – such an old bullet that he is a musket ball… (past Olympian and paddler extra-ordinaire) , Kim Parks  and Herman Chalupsky (stalwarts of the race and the reason the world has breweries!), two cardiologists (Dave Gilmer and Chris Quirk- last year Aussie Quirk beat Dave by 20 seconds. Saffa Gilmer wants revenge). On the ladies side we have the Dubai Desert Queen, Thea, who will want to show that she has improved to the point where she can challenge the Aussie and Saffa beach babes. Oh and then there is Adam Fahey claiming that he is just on holiday and not really racing (Sorry Adam –I just had to mention you again).

The tension is building around the surfski.info (SA) v Fat Paddlers (Aus) team event.  Ss.i is rumored to have the edge on the paddling side of things but, when asked about their chances in the boat race leg, the FP team was heard to remark confidently, “we have some form in that area…”

The Fat Paddler - training for the Le Morne channel!

Don’t forget

Remember, you must bring a leash, PFD (life jacket thingy), paddle and your personal Lycra! And the dollars for entry and ski hire. Whilst we do as much as we can to ensure your safety, you too must play your part and have the above kit. This applies to everyone and at all times when outside the reef in Mauritius.

Who’s coming?

Attached is the updated entry list – if you are on the list you have been allocated a ski. If you are on the list and are not coming please let us know. As you can see we have some new names – welcome to Michael Dobler (a top German paddler) and two French folk Pierre Paillusseau and Angie Mouden.

Unfortunately we have had a couple of withdrawals as well: the Big O Chalupsky, Kurt “The Muscle” Tutt and Hayden Smith of Aussie/ UAE are both unable to make it. The list also shows the top twenty seeds for the event and also where those who paddled in 2011 finished.

Forecast

The international paddling community will be watching the weather in Mauritius wishing for a classic downwind. The long range forecast looks stunning Easterly winds at 40 to 60 kph, swell Easterly at 2.5 meters and at a frequency of 9m/second. So wave is only just slower than the wind speed. Miss a run and you have lost fifty meters.

Must do’s

My must do’s in Ile Maurice

  • Do at least five downwinds
  • Buy Vanilla Tea (Pavilions brand is my Wife’s choice)
  • Sneak a few bottles of The New Grove Rum into your kit to take home
  • Visit Port Louis – waterfront and the trading stalls – awesome materials for table clothes and throws.
  • Dive with Dolphins (speak to Wesley or Dominic they arrange this)
  • Surf Tamarin (at least think about it)
  • Deep sea fishing – catch your own sushi (again Wesley or Dominic)
  • Talk to the locals
  • Drink some Phoenix, Blue Marlin and a few more (drink responsibly – share!)
  • Try to dance the Sega
  • Book for 2013 ISMOC
  • Thank Keith Fenn
