As we all know, Molokai is the Big Kahuna of surfski races; the 32mile/51km crossing of the Kaiwi Channel between Molokai and Oahu Islands in Hawaii is a daunting challenge (whatever the weather!).  The race is back for 2014, but it's now back under the management of the Kanaka Ikaika Racing Association (KIRA).  Here's the preliminary announcement from KIRA's Jim Foti.

Divisions and registration fees

(NB: inclusive of surfski transportation from Oahu to Kaluakoi on Molokai) 

  • Elite solo division – SS1 - $325.00
  • Elite solo division – SS2 - $575.00
  • Open relay division – SS1 (2, 3 or 4 paddlers) - $75.00 plus $225.00 per paddler
  • Open relay division – SS2 (3 - 6 paddlers) - $75.00 plus $225.00 per paddler
  • Junior solo – SS1 - $225.00
  • Junior solo – SS2 - $375.00
  • Age categories for Elite solo SS-1 division – Male and Female:  Junior (18 and under),19–29, 30–39, 40–49, 50–54, 55–59, 60–64, 65–69, 70+        
  • Elite solo SS-2 and Open relay divisions are open to all ages.
  • We will also have a division and awards for the Hawaii resident paddlers

Start Times

10:00 – 11:00 a.m. start time.  Details TBA

Prize Money

There will be a purse for the Elite solo men and women, and a Hawaii resident purse.  Amount TBA

Pre-race packet pick up  

  • Wednesday May 14 from 4:00 pm – 7:00 pm.  Location TBA
  • Thursday May 15 from 9:00 am – 4:00 pm at the Kanaka Ikaika headquarters at the Foti Paddlesports Shop in Kapaa Quarry, Kailua.

Surfski Transportation from Oahu  

Surfski transportation vessel will depart on Saturday morning May 17.  Paddlers will be required to load and secure their surfskis on Friday May 16 at the marina on Sand Island.  If you live on Kauai, Maui, Lanai or the Big Island and plan to ship on Young Bros, let us know and we can arrange to have your ski picked up at the dock and transported to Kaluakoi.  Contact us at This email address is being protected from spambots.
