Durban, South Africa - Defending series champion Matt Bouman charged to victory at the New Balance Grading race which formed the first leg of the Discovery Men's Health Surf Ski Series.

The twelve kilometre race from uShaka beach in Durban enjoyed calm conditions with very little swell and was the perfect start to the popular winter series.

Bouman lead from the start while Barry Lewin and Grant Van der Walt worked together to keep up. "Matt (Bouman) is in really good form at the moment," said Lewin "He's been training hard and is at the top of his game!" he added.

EuroChallenge Champion

Bouman who recently returned home after taking the title in the European surf ski championship race in Spain found himself leading the race with Lewin and teenager van der Walt close behind. "It was a great race! It was the three lighties being chased by the three veterans," said Lewin who claimed the second position. "But we showed them good form!" he added.

The three A-list paddlers were being trailed by series regulars Oscar and Herman Chalupsky along with Andre Pohl in an attempt to stay in contact, although Bouman, Lewin and Van der Walt continued to maintain their pace and kept their lead to finish the race on top.

Women's Race

Olympian Michele Eray took home the ladies title despite her recent bought of flu with series favourite Michelle Eder and Carol Joyce close on her tail. "It was a great race with awesome conditions," said Eray. "Although I've been down with flu for the past few weeks I thoroughly enjoyed the race!"

Eray has moved into Durban to compete in the winter series which will have added interest to the ladies competition. She has shown her strength in recent months after claiming various titles including that of the Drak Challenge earlier this year.

The double ski category was won by Richard Philips and Gary Clarke followed by Gary Waud and Glenn Hilliar. Adriaan and Colleen Struwig took home the mixed doubles ahead of Dave Herridge and Debra Barker.

With over 200 competing paddlers the event proves the growing popularity of the winter series.
