For the three Fish Hoek Surf Lifesaving Clubmates, DawidMocke, Jasper Mocke and Tom Schilperoort it was home territory and they wereout to dominate from the start of the third race in the Cape Town Discovery Men'sHealth Series.

Challenging Course

Race organizer Billy Harker gave the paddlers the surfchallenge course -three laps comprising an upwind leg, a technically demanding downwindsection and the "surf challenge": a zig-zag leg through the shore break aroundthree portages.

Batch Start

The 180-odd skis were sent off in batches, the short coursepaddlers going first followed by the doubles, then Elite and A-grade, B-Gradedown to E-Grade...

But the lap course made for fun and games as paddlers ofvarying ability arrived simultaneously through the shore-break at the turningpoints.  Fortunately collisions wererelatively gentle in the small surf.

At the Elite/A-Grade start the brothers Mocke and TomSchilperoort made an immediate break from the rest of the pack.  Dawid Mocke was never really challenged, butJasper Mocke and Schilperoort had a ding-dong dice to the end, with Jasperovertaking Schilperoort on the last zig-zag leg, only to go unnecessarily arounda flag near the finish which allowed Schilperoort to take the gap and secondplace.

Women's Race

In the women's race, Fish Hoek lifesaver Rebecca Newson hadher string of first places come to an abrupt halt - as Plettenberg Bay K4Olympian Michele Eray romped away to take first place.  Newson, on the comeback trail after two yearsof battling injuries, paddles an ancient Fenn Millenium and is looking forsponsorship.

Nikki Mocke came in third.
