Forerunner 305

The Garmin Forerunner series of GPS units proved an instant hit with paddlers when they were released a year ago. Garmin has just released the next generation of units in the form of the 205/305 series.

I was fortunate enough to lay my hands on a Forerunner 305 for a weekend. In what I'm told is the first independent public review worldwide of the Forerunner 305, here’s what I found…

 

The Epic V10 has been in production since the beginning of 2005 and has generated huge interest both in South Africa and the rest of the world.  

Its fundamental characteristics are:

• Length: 21'4  (6.5 m)
• Width:  17-1/8"  (43.5 cm)
• Weight:  33 lbs  (15 kg)  Ultra Carbon 28 lbs.  (13 kg)

The Custom Kayaks Icon surf ski is a relative newcomer to the market having been in production since early 2004.

The fundamental characteristics are:

• Length: 6.42m (21ft)
• Construction: glassfibre sandwich or composite carbon/glassfibre
• Weight (glassfibre, average): 15kg
