I have a racing K1 that is old-school lightweight design - as thin as possible, kevlar and epoxy layup. Never any concerns about chipping it. However, the sides are as flexible as a comfy slipper and perceived wisdom says that means it is slow.
Modern K1s, as rigid as possible and light, chip when hitting a twig. Literally.
However, my K1 would fold up if crashed over a wave (well, assuming I was still upright and in it). Not break, but fold up.

surfkis? People want ultralight, rigid - something has to be compromised. The ultra-stiff but lightweight hull is like an eggshell - really strong until you flex it.
