Outlaws ahead! Outlaws ahead!

It’s cold, it’s wet, the water temperature is just above freezing, and most of us have been hibernating and putting on those extra layers over the winter months. But the warmer weather is on the horizon, and with it comes the thrills, spills and sheer fun of Victoria’s biggest ocean paddling series, Outlaw.

2010/11 Series

Here at Outlaw, we’ve been busy getting permits, drumming up sponsorship, and planning exciting courses and prizes for the coming 2010/11 series. We reckon it’s going to be the biggest and best yet, with courses and conditions to test paddlers of all abilities, from rookies to guns.

Again, there will be two series on offer this season – an ocean series for those who like their racing downwind and dirty; and the popular crit series, perfect for those new to the sport, or more experienced paddlers wishing to test their power over shorter distances.

Outlaw Ocean Racing Series

This series will comprise six events:

Echuca 16th Oct: Following the success of last year’s event, Outlaw Paddling has once again joined forces with the YMCA Echuca Mini Marathon to give those landlocked ocean paddlers up north a chance to give their ocean skis a run on the Mighty Murray. With such a strong outrigger and ocean paddling community in Echuca, this race is sure to be another great success.

Eastern Beach, Geelong 31st Oct: Taking on board feedback from last year’s series, we have decided to put on an ocean event suitable for all levels of paddler. This race, in the calm, sheltered waters of Geelong’s picturesque Eastern Beach, will give top paddlers the chance for a solid hit out, while those new to new ocean paddling will have the opportunity race in a controlled downwind/ocean environment. If you’ve never raced on the ocean before, then this event if for you; if you’re an old hand, then come down and win yourself some cash!

Lorne Surf Coast 21st Nov: If you’ve paddled off Lorne, then you’ll know what all the hype is about. The beach is stunning, the coffee is great, and the conditions on the water, while not too hairy, still provide for some downwind derring-do! This event will be an ideal training opportunity for those brave souls taking on the Lorne Anaconda in December.

Graeme Long Memorial Paddle 9th Jan: The most prestigious race in the Outlaw Ocean Series is sure to get heart rates up, with big swell always on the cards along the Surf Coast. This event is going to epitomise what ocean racing is all about, with world champions of the sport taking part, so if you rate yourself on the open seas, we expect to see you here! Or if you just want to paddle past world-famous surf brakes like Bells Beach and Winkipop, don’t miss this event. Its also part of the Australian Ocean Racing Series.

Barwon Heads 13th Feb: If you’re a beginner and found the Eastern Beach race to your liking, then put your newfound skills to the next test by taking on the long, gentle point breaks at Barwon Heads. This penultimate race in the Outlaw Ocean Series will be equally thrilling for spectators, so bring along the whole family for a fun social day

Across The Bay in a Day 20th March: This challenging 45-kilometer hurt-fest is where the cream of the crop get to really test out their downwind know-how. Warming – ocean racing experts need only apply! More information about the course will be available closer to the date, so watch this space.

Outlaw Finn Paddle Crit Series

Running on the last Friday of the month from October through to April, the Outlaw Crit Series is not just a friendly, accessible race for paddlers of all abilities, but is also a great opportunity to socialise with other salt-water junkies and blow off the stress of a long working week out on beautiful Port Philip Bay.

Races start at 6.30pm sharp from Sandridge Life Saving Club, so skip the boring office gossip at the local pub, and get out in the sun, sand and surf (yep, it can get pretty choppy out on the Bay!) instead.

Photo Competition

Paddling isn’t all about adrenalin, lactic acid burn, and staying upright in two-metre swell. It’s also about getting out in the natural marine environment and soaking up the beauty and serenity of the open ocean.

You’re invited to share those special moments with us via our weekly photo competition. All you need to do is email your best snaps to: This email address is being protected from spambots.
