Villajoyosa, Alicante, Spain: It’s confirmed: the fourth edition of the EuroChallenge is part of the Ocean Paddler World Series.  The event takes place from 4-6 May, 2012.

“We’re excited to confirm that this year we’ll be going downwind,” said Race Director Jonathan Neill.  Two races will be run over the three days: the first a new 20km downwind route; the second, the classic round-the-island course that has run for the last three years.

“Having a three day window means we can almost guarantee wind for the downwind course,” said Neill.  “The downwind event will get preference and will run on whichever day offers the best conditions.”

The race has a stellar list of past paddlers including Dawid Mocke, Sean Rice, Matt Bouman, Michele Eray, Nikki Mocke, Tarryn Brown (all of whom are past winners), Hank McGregor, Jasper Mocke, Tim Jacobs, Manual Busto, Tom Schilperoort, Eirik Larsen, and the list goes on.

“The race will fall under category A or B,” said Neill.  “We have Euro12,000 in hand already and are 99.9% certain we’ll get the additional Euro4,000 that would take us into A category.”

[Editor: From past experience (it’s been my pleasure to attend two of the races), this event is one of those where the racing is only part of the attraction: the area is stunning, the beaches beautiful and the little medieval town of Villajoyosa is a photographer’s dream.  Don’t miss the medieval fair and whatever you do, don’t miss the chocolate shop a few streets back from the beach!]
