Rounding Barrenjoey Headland, the finish a mere 800m away, Nick Holt felt the grand piano drop.  After leading for three quarters of the race, he was in second place and hanging on for dear life.  Unfortunately for Nick, there were two paddlers bearing down on him.

The Narrabeen Beach Challenge is being held this Sunday, 9 November on Sydney’s Northern Beaches. This 20 kilometre grind is the first ‘true’ downwind race of the Sydney series and will run between Narrabeen and Barrenjoey Headland, depending on the direction of the wind and swell.

Event organizers nearly turned the race around on Friday before the race, but chose to go ahead with the original course. The conditions looked quite daunting on the day but the wind eased to around a 4 knot head wind.  Around 300 Spectators saw 60 ocean paddlers take to the water for a spectacular floating start.  Competitors headed firstly towards Yallingup Beach then turning for a direct line to Sugarloaf Rock and around Cape Naturaliste....what a striking coast line this is - certainly makes for an awesome paddle experience.

“Look out!” The yell of warning was muffled by a thousand litres of water crashing down onto Mark Anderson’s ski.  As he, Luke Michael and the Orange Red7 double rounded Barrenjoey Headland they realised, too late, that there was no escape from the wave that would take them all out of race contention.

As I flipped my ski upright and clambered back on in a totally graceless deep-water remount, I watched the rest of the field disappear into the distance.  With 14km still to go, I knew that my whole race would involve trying to claw my way, place by place, through the field in an attempt to get at least a decent placing.

Australia's surfski paddlers have come out of hibernation - with a vengeance!  Apart from the Ocean Series opener in Sydney (and the first ever Surfski Expo), there's the Lion Island Challenge coming up on 25th October.  And in Victoria, the Charger Ski Challenge starts on 26th October...  And we've got a great video of the Sydney Manly Wharf Bridge to Beach race... read all about it!
