ImageBreaking news: South Africans dominated the paddle categories of the 2007 Multiplex Avon Descent in Western Australia this weekend.  Sven Bruss won the singles, while brothers Daryl and Brett Bartho beat local rivals Ash Nesbit and Marcus Brockhurst in the team event.

ImageSydney Harbour once again played host to what is now Australia's biggest ocean paddling event.

Four hundred paddlers lined up under the harbour bridge and raced their way to Manly Cove in perfect Sydney Autumn conditions. Along with the paddlers two hundred ocean swimmers took on the grueling event. Racing as individuals, four and two person relay teams, the swimmers took off ninety minutes before the paddlers.

Some interesting stats: average speed 9.5mph/15.5kph; max speed 13.9mph/22.3kph.

 

According to MotionBased, the wind speed was 14-18mph/23-30kph WSW.

Team South Africa Sweeps Day One World Cup Surf Ski Champs

 

ImagePerth, November, 24: Last week at a tune up prior to day one of the World Cup Surf Ski race from Fremantle to Sorrento Beach, Oscar Chalupsky narrowly edged out fellow Durbanite Daryl Bartho, winning by just over 10 seconds. The biggest surprise wasn't so much that the 43-year-old Chalupsky won but that he finished first in a relatively flat sea, conditions that would normally favour his younger, faster rival.

herman_leads_perth_1_151x100.jpgThe Surfski World Cup in Perth was held on the 19th and 20th of November.  This event is in its second year after being held for the first time last year. This year it was the 2nd leg of the fledgling Surfski World Series, the 1st leg being the King of the Harbour in Auckland New Zealand, and the 3rd and final leg being held in Tahiti on the 26th and 27th of November.

Oscar Chalupsky came back with a vengeance in the 2nd and final day of the World Cup competition in Perth. After finishing a disappointing 5th on Day 1, Oscar won Sunday's Rottenest Island to Hillary Harbour stage comfortably. The win moved him into 2nd place overall, behind younger brother Herman in the overall standings. Herman easily won the first day of competition and finished a strong 2nd on Day 2.
