Could the Molokai record be broken this year?  "Yes," said Dean Gardiner a few minutes ago from Oahu, "In these conditions and with the quality of paddlers at the top end of the field I reckon there's a strong chance that the record will go."

South African Sean Rice won the 2009 NY Mayor’s Cup race this morning in grueling conditions, holding off a strong challenge from Bevan Manson (SA) and Jaka Jazbec (Italy). Evergreen Olympian Greg Barton (US) came fourth.

Rough weather forced the organizers to revert to plan B - a 29km/16mi out and back course gave the paddlers a 14km downwind run followed by a 14km grind into the wind.

San Francisco – Wild Currents...!

Yesterday afternoon I paddled on the course of the US Surfski Champs from the start at Fort Baker, out as far as Pt. Diablo and back to the race finish at Berkeley Marina.  We hit the wildest currents I've ever seen.

I'm totally blown away by San Francisco... In the first 36 hours I had done two 20km downwind paddles, I'd played in the currents under the Golden Gate bridge - and man, the hospitality of these people has to be experienced to be believed...
